It’s Not that urgent

The collect for the day

Almighty God, look mercifully upon your people, that by your great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

The LESSON: 1 thessalonians 5: 1-6

The Day of the Lord

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.

The psalm: 39: 5-9

5 “Lord, let me know my end and the number of my days,
that I may learn how short my life is.

6 Behold, you have made my days as a span in length,
and my age is even as nothing before you; and truly,
everyone living is but a breath.

7 For everyone walks about as a shadow, and disquiets himself in vain;
he heaps up riches and cannot tell who shall gather them.

8 And now, Lord, what is my hope?
Truly, my hope is in you.

9 Deliver me from all my offenses,
and make me not a taunt of the foolish.

The gospel: Luke 12: 16-21

16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
